Research Interests

Dr. Rettew has been active across a diverse range of research, clinical, teaching, and administrative endeavors.  He began his career primarily as a researcher with particular interests in child temperament and personality and the boundaries of psychiatric disorder.  He has published over 100 articles, chapters, and scientific abstracts on a variety of mental health topics and is author of the book Child Temperament: New Thinking About the Boundaries Between Traits and Illness.   Dr. Rettew developed and then directed the University of Vermont’s Child Psychiatry Fellowship program until 2018 which focused on training residents to be experts in all of child mental health, not just mental illness.  Over time, Dr. Rettew has become increasingly interested in public policy and helping all families access quality mental health care.  Current interests also include integrated care and parenting, which has led to an upcoming parenting book called Parenting Made Complicated to be published by Oxford University Press in 2021.  Dr. Rettew writes a blog for Psychology Today entitled the ABCs of Child Psychiatry which has been viewed over one million times.  You can follow him on Twitter or Facebook @PediPsych
