Dr. Bonev received his B.A. from University of Sofia, Sofia, Bulgaria and his Ph.D. in Biology from Institute of Physiology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. His postdoctoral training was at University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany.
Dr. Bonev’s research is focused on understanding the role of cell membrane and sarcoplasmic reticulum in the control of smooth muscle contractility. A variety of techniques such as patch clamp technique, fluorescent imaging of single vascular smooth muscle cells, laser confocal microscopy are used to study the role of cell membrane ion channels and Ca2+ release (Ca-sparks) from sarcoplasmic reticulum in the regulation of vascular tone and the contractility of some non vascular types of smooth muscle, and their modulation by hormones and neurotransmitters as well.
